Chesapeake Bay Water Quality
- Current Conditions
This analysis shows how the Current Conditions of the Chesapeake
Bay this year compare with the monitoring data collected since
1985. This is accomplished through a graphical analysis that plots
averaged monthly current year data against averaged monthly historical
data at 8 key stations in the mainstem Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapake
Bay Program (CBP) Monitoring Team conducts this analysis from
provisional data collected by Maryland's Department of Natural
Resources (DNR) and Old Dominion University (ODU) for surface
temperature, bottom dissolved oxygen, water clarity and surface
salinity. The CBP Monitoring Team also tracks average monthly
river flow data provided by the United States Geological Survey
(USGS). Maryland DNR also conducts Current Conditions analysis
at a number of stations in Maryland, this information is now available
on DNR's Eyes
on the Bay website.

The 64,000 square mile Chesapeake Bay watershed extends
from New York to Virginia, and from West Virginia to Delaware.
A cooperative effort of all residents of the watershed is
needed to restore the water quality of the Bay and its tributaries.
