These are five major designs of fishway structures which are used in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Notching, breaching, and removing the dam are also options, especially when a dam is small or in disrepair. These fishways are all designed to provide the optimal water velocity and water depth to allow the fish to efficiently pass the obstacle. Since these obstacles range from twelve inches to ninety feet high, the fish passage designs vary a great deal.
