The Patuxent River Monitoring program is an on-going Maryland state
project the includes both monitoring and mathematical modeling of the
estuary in support of the Maryland Patuxent Restoration Strategy.
Direct sediment-water exchanges are measured monthly at ten stations on
the Patuxent River. Thirty-seven stations are sampled for salinity and
depth gradients, surficial sediment are analyzed for total and active
sediment chlorophyll a concentrations, and bottom water nutrient
concentrations and sediment redox potential is measured. These
parameters are used as input variables for statistical models that
predict sediment water fluxes at the mapping stations. A near shore SAV
habitat evaluation is also conducted.
