The District of Columbia Water Quality Monitoring Program consists of
76 station network in which water quality is monitored in the Potomac
and Anacostia rivers, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, the Washington
Ship Channel, and the Tidal Basin. Sampling is conducted primarily on a
monthly basis, but 20 times in the Core stations. Short-term and
intensive sampling is also conducted on a need be basis. The DC
Monitoring Program is coordinated with the Maryland and Virginia
monitoring program and with the Metropolitan Washington Council of
Governments.

- Monitoring,To characterize present water quality conditions
and long-term trends in water quality response to different control
strategies in order to maintain the environmental integrity of district
waters, protect the public from potential health hazards, and continue
to use these waters as a valuable resource.
