Sediment Data Sets

The sediments data base is the result of CBP-sponsored research which describes both physical properties of bottom sediments and their composition. There is additional sediments data in the Toxics data base and in the Resources data base; these two contain toxicant concentrations in Bay sediments and biological properties such as benthic species diversity, respectively. Sediment composition is characterized by water content, grain size, percent sand, silt, and clay, and other properties. The coverage for Bay bottom sediment is from 1975 to 1981 when the CBP research was conducted. Specific data sources include the Maryland Geological Survey and the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences.
