The cultural data base includes population statistics and land use
data. The population statistics are included for 1950, 1960, 1970,
and 1980 based on U.S. Census data; projections of population are
included for 1990 and 2000, estimated by each state in the Bay basin
and, in nearly all cases, based on the 1980 Census results. The records
cover the states of Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, West
Virginia, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. They are broken
out by state, basin, above and below the fall line, and by sub-basins.
Historical land use data consists of agricultural data from the U.S.
Census of Agriculture (cropland and pasture land) and forest land
data from periodic timber surveys conducted by selected states and
the U.S. Forest Service. Because these data were collected by different
agencies for different purposes at different times, they provide only
a general picture of land use changes in the Bay Basin between 1950
and 1980. Data are organized by watershed, state, county, and above
and below the fall line. There are no projections of land use in the
Chesapeake Bay Basin.
